18V cordless angle grinders

On a grinder, safety matters as much as power: look for a brake, kickback protection and restart protection. My pick: the DeWalt DCG406, with a paddle switch, brake and kickback protection.

An angle grinder cuts metal, tiles and stone, and grinds down welds. It’s one of the tools behind the most accidents, so here safety counts as much as power.

Every grinder on this list takes 125 mm discs, the most versatile size. Use them with 4 Ah batteries or bigger.

What to look for before you buy

  • Restart protection: it won’t start by itself if the battery comes out with the trigger locked.
  • Kickback protection: it stops if the disc jams.
  • Disc brake and a dead-man (paddle) switch.
  • Brushless: more runtime.

The pros and cons summarise opinions that come up again and again in the reviews and forums linked in the sources. I haven’t tested these tools in person.

What about Milwaukee?

I don’t include it with an Amazon link: its extended guarantee only covers purchases from an authorised distributor. If you already have M18 batteries, look for this model with the official dealer locator.

My pick

DeWalt DCG406 for safety. On any other platform, check yours has kickback and restart protection before you buy.
