18V Battery platform
DeWalt 18V XR
A trade range with powerful batteries (POWERSTACK) and the bonus that 54V FlexVolt batteries also work in 18V tools. Built for site work; for home use it’s more than you need.

Which batteries fit and which don’t
- Every 18V XR, POWERSTACK and FlexVolt battery fits every 18V XR tool.
- The 12V range has its own batteries; it only shares chargers with the 18V range.
- I haven’t found official adapters on sale in the UK.
What people like most
- A broad range on one battery, plus the FlexVolt option for big machines
- Compact POWERSTACK batteries with a 3-year guarantee
- Usually a bit cheaper than Milwaukee
What people criticise most
- A slightly smaller range than Makita or Milwaukee
- Standard batteries only get 1 year even if you register the tool
- The big FlexVolt batteries are heavy and expensive
I summarise opinions that come up again and again in forums and reviews, linked in the sources. I haven’t tested these tools in person.
Who it’s for
Good fit: Trades and demanding DIYers who want power and a battery that grows into 54V machines.
Not a good fit: If you only hang pictures and build flat-pack furniture, you’re paying for a trade range you won’t use.
