18V Platform comparison
Makita 18V LXT vs DeWalt 18V XR
For home and renovations, Makita LXT: more tools, more compact, and garden tools on the same battery. DeWalt XR makes sense if you work on site and want more powerful batteries or a route up to 54V machines without changing system.

Where the difference lies
Range
Makita has almost twice as many 18V products. If you’re worried about not finding a tool in two years’ time, it’s the safer bet.
Power
DeWalt has two cards Makita doesn’t have at 18V: POWERSTACK batteries and 54V FlexVolt batteries, which also work in its 18V tools. Makita handles big machines with two batteries at once, or by pushing you towards its other range, 40V XGT, which isn’t compatible.
Guarantee
Both reach 3 years on tools, but neither treats batteries the same way: Makita keeps them at 2 years and DeWalt only gives POWERSTACK the full 3.
Kits
The two starter kits are almost twins: brushless combi drill and impact driver, two 5 Ah batteries and a charger. The real difference is what you’ll buy next.
The assessments summarise opinions that come up again and again in forums and reviews, linked in the sources. I haven’t tested these tools in person.
